A Note From the Head Chef of WEE CAN COOK!
My idea to start WEE CAN COOK! began in the Fall of 2007 when my daughter, then 3 1/2 years old, couldn't get enough of cooking. Cookbooks, cooking shows, pretend cooking, dressing as a chef (or as she called it, "a maker") for Halloween and of course, cooking with Mommy in the kitchen.
During these times in the kitchen with my daughter, I found myself incorporating an array of learning concepts because it was so natural. Cooking is a fun, hands-on way to introduce children to a whole world of knowledge. We'd make a recipe and it would remind us of a book we'd read or we'd practice counting, describing and comparing. It gave her meaningful opportunities to begin to learn about measurement and to understand sequence of events in following a recipe. Not to mention the pure joy a child gets when we allow them to mix, stir, knead, roll, pour, or crack eggs!
I now have two girls who love to be by my side in the kitchen. My husband and I met here in Gainesville at the University of Florida in 1994. I went on to get my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education and then taught at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School.
I now look forward to this new venture and am ready to cook up some fun!
